Psychic Development

  • Get enough sleep. Sleep is extremely important when it comes to working with your psychic abilities.
  • Meditation. Meditating on your third eye and crown chakras will help develop your intuition, clairvoyance, and claircognizance.
  • Working with your aura and chakras will enhance and strengthen your clairsentient abilities.
  • Tarot, palmistry, and other forms of divination helps you get in touch with your intuition.
  • Orange calcite for astral travel and past life meditations. Amethyst for clairvoyance and dream retention. Clear Quartz for all your abilities.
  • Wear purple. Purple vibrates at the same frequency of the third eye chakra which will help activate and balance it.
  • Cast spells to help unlock your abilities.
  • Purple, white, and blue candles work well for enhancing psychic abilities, and spirit communication.
  • Some deities associated with psychic abilities and divination: Apollo, Hekate, Circe, Cerridwen, etc.
  • Midnight to three in the morning are powerful times to work on developing mediumship abilities.
  • Take a spiritual bath to open up your abilities. Include lemon slices (they open up energy channels), lavender (clairvoyance), and burn sandalwood incense (heightens spiritual awareness)
  • Finding a mentor could be very beneficial especially if your focus is on mediumship. They can teach from their knowledge and experience.
  • Working with spirit guides and ancestors consistently will naturally help to develop your abilities.
  • Consistently being close to nature will aid in opening up your spiritual awareness.
  • Keep a record of your dreams, and anything that pokes at your intuition. Once you start allowing yourself to perceive the world from an intuitive perspective your abilities will flourish.
  • Casting spells to enhance your abilities is extremely beneficial.

NEVER preform a spell if:

-You are sick

-You are angry

-You are depressed*

-You are vengeful**

-You are obsessed with someone

IF YOU PREFORM WHILE:

Sick:Your spell won’t work. PERIOD. You’re weak, your body is weak, your concentration is weak. Especially when you’re trying to recite a spell with a spasming cough and leaking eyes. S’not gonna work kay?

Angry: When you do spells with anger there is often a backlash–at YOU. Plus, after you’ve calmed down from your fiery rage you generally feel pretty bad about the things you’ve said to others. Now imagine if you did a SPELL and now you can’t take it back and it hurts someone you didn’t mean to. Plus, I mean, backlash. Breath. Don’t do a spell when angry

Depressed: Like sickness when your energy is low and you’re thoughts are low your spell isn’t going to get more than 2 feet past your body. Spells (contrary to fluffy readings) take a LARGE amount of your energy–and if not yours, then pulling from others and condensing it and raising it and focusing it. Can you do that when you can’t even get out of bed? No. Take care of yourself. Worry about spells later.

Vengeful: Like anger, doing a spell when you feel like getting back someone because they hurt your feelings isn’t the best use of your energy. Often spells done in revenge come back years later to you…with devastating consequences. I’ve personally seen it happen to a fellow witch. They suffered for YEARS. So uh, think about that.

Obsession: You love *insert love interest* but they never look at you! SO unfair! You love them so much, why don’t they notice you!? Don’t do a spell to make someone love. I won’t say the spell won’t work. It WILL. But when an obsessive person casts the spell, the person in turn becomes obsessive and, in some cases, dangerously so. BE MINDFUL OF FREEWILL. An old coven member of mine did that and they didn’t have love for the next 6 years from ONE. SPELL. So use an attraction spell, but not a “make them love me” spell on the person you’re obsessing over.

*THERE ARE SPELLS YOU CAN DO FOR DEPRESSION TO HELP LIFT DEPRESSION FROM YOU (but again, take medical help too, okay?). These spells are to draw positive energy into you to make it easier to get OUT of depression–it doesn’t banish it.

**THERE ARE SPELLS IN CERTAIN TRADITIONS that encourage and allow for revenge. I’m not saying be a white witch of the purest pure, but I AM saying that when you do dark things, dark things find you and it’s not pretty. Especially if you don’t know how to protect your self and minimize the things that will come back to you.

self-medicated-l0ve

Feel free to perform magick in all of these states! I don’t think that I can make this any more clear. YOU CAN PERFORM MAGICK THAT WILL WORK IN ALL OF THESE STATES! Sometimes, these emotions can fuel your magick. As long as you can hold onto your intention, you can hold onto your spell and push it to manifest. Vengence and Anger are great states to be in when casting curses and hexes.

A Talisman Against Unwanted Sexual Attention

thecunningwife

Since I’ve begun the Plant Ally Project, I’ve been wondering what spells different parts of pine trees could be used for. Pine cones are prickly, which makes them great for defensive spells, and as they’re one of two reproductive parts of a pine tree, they’re particularly great for spells of a sexual nature. Putting two and two together, here follows a spell that repels unwanted sexual attention. (While the cones are regarded biologically as “female,” this spell is not exclusively for women. People of all sexes and genders can use this spell effectively.)

Note: If you are being harassed for any reason, tell someone in a position to help you and take action to stop it. Don’t stay silent. Don’t put up with it. Don’t try to deal with it on your own. This spell is meant as a general deterrent and supplement, not a replacement for taking action against deliberate and repeat offenders.

You will need:

- a pine cone
- lavender essential oil
- water
- a spray bottle
- an oven
- plastic sealable bag
- thread or yarn (you can choose a color that best communicates protection and defense – I use black, but that’s me; I discourage using warm, stimulating colors like red, orange, or yellow, though)

What to do:

1. Go out and get a pine cone in a size that’s suitable for using as a charm – no bigger than your palm. Rinse off any dirt and debris with water.

2. Preheat the oven to 200° F. When it’s heated, place the pine cone on a cookie sheet and bake it for about an hour (this draws out and dries up the sap, kills any parasites/microbes/yucky things, and opens up the cones fully). When the time is up, take it out and let it cool completely before handling it.

3. Mix a few drops of lavender oil with some clean water in a spray bottle. When the pine cone has cooled, place it in the plastic bag and spritz it thoroughly with the lavender water.

4. Seal the bag and shake it up, visualizing a protective barrier that repels unwanted glances, remarks, etc., emanating from the pine cone and surrounding your body. Open the bag, spritz generously once more, seal and shake again while visualizing the same barrier.

5. Store it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight for two to three weeks. Once a week, shake it up while visualizing the barrier.

6. After the incubation period is over, take the pine cone out of the bag. If it’s a little slick, set it out to dry out for a bit. Then tie the yarn around the pine cone, depending on how you want it to hang. Knot it – you could knot it nine times, using the 9 Knots Charm, or you can come up with your own charm for however many knots you feel is necessary to establish and bind the spell’s energy and purpose to the talisman. If you know how to crochet, you can also replace the knots with chain stitches!

7. Tie the end of the thread/yarn to an object you’ll be carrying around with you when you expect unwanted sexual attention/advances – a book bag, brief case, phone (if it’s small enough to serve as a phone charm), purse, your car’s rear-view mirror, etc.

You can make several of these at the same time if you want them in multiple places or to distribute them to friends and others who might need some extra protection.

Stay safe, my friends!

Smoke Out the Curse

thelivingwiccan

First off, I want to apologize for being away for a while. My poor laptop caught a virus. Anyway. I wrote this little thing, and thought it may be of some use to people. For when you believe someone has been cursed.

“Smoke Out the Curse” Spell

You’ll need:
-fur of a white hare
-black peppercorn
-firesafe container
-clove of garlic

Step one: Burn the fur and peppercorn into ash.

Step two: Have the afflicted person breathe the smoke while you use the smoke to cleanse them. (Don’t be stupid about this - obviously don’t do this with someone who has asthma, etc)

Step three: Roll the clove of garlic in the ashes of the remainder.

Step four: Have the affected person carry the clove with them until the curse is lifted.

Step five: When the curse is lifted, toss the clove off of a cliff, into the ocean, down a ravine, or some other geographic “point of no-return”.

Happy casting!

Crash course on fake stones/misrepresentations

cryptia

Because I have been too lazy to type this all up.

Quartz:

  • If your quartz has teeny air bubbles it’s glass.
  • If it’s got a fruit name it’s dyed. End of story. (strawberry, cherry, lemon, pineapple, blueberry) yes there may be some very rare exceptions-fire quartz being dubbed strawberry- but due to the rise in fakes with that name it’s generally called fire quartz now.
  • Aura quartz is a regular quartz that’s been bonded with another material. (man made)
  • Cinnabar Infused Quartz usually reconstituted and mixed together to make a red crystal.
  • Green quartz can be grown in a lab and anything that forrest green color is

Turquoise:

  • Magnesite and howlite look very very similar to turquoise when they’ve been dyed, magnesite will have very deep cracks in it though.
  • No there is no white turquoise.
  • You can do a uv test to see if it’s real

Amber

  • Often faked with Copal. They look nearly identical.
  • Amber will float in salt water-copal will not.

Irradiated/dyed stones:

  • Very vibrant colors!!

Irradiated: (they irradiate the crystals to get a deeper or more vibrant color)

  • deeply pigmented topaz or kunzite
  • dark (almost black) smokey quartz
  • very deep pink or red tourmaline
  • colored diamonds
  • some cultured pearls
  • vibrant yellow heliodor

Dyed:

  • Pearls
  • Agate
  • coral
  • other stones may be dyed as well, generally if it looks fake..it is.

Heat treated stones: (really not a bad thing but if you’re going for natural)

  • Amethyst-lighten color+remove brown
  • Citrine-heat treated amethyst.
  • Aquamarine-remove green
  • Ruby-clearer stone
  • Sapphire-clearer stone

Rainbow Cal-Silica

  • Nope, completely fake 100%
  • Literally just car paint layered with calcite and resin.

Citrine: (im so sorry)

  • Much of the citrine on the market is lab made.
  • If it’s lab made it’s usually amethyst that’s been heated until it changes color
  • The bottom of these stones will be white with more color at the tips.
  • srry

Lapis Lazuli:

  • High quality is vibrant blue, hard to come by, and very expensive.
  • Low quality howlite, jasper or sodalite is dyed blue, and passed off as lapis.
  • Acetone will remove the dye but damage the stone.

Obsidian:

  • The clear green obsidian you see all over ebay is slag glass.
  • Natural green obsidian has been found but it is opaque and is more gray than green.
  • there is red obsidian as well but again, it’s not a vibrant red and is more brick colored.
  • Wikipedia is not always right.

Goldstone:

  • it’s glass it’s legitimately just glass

Opalite:

  • also glass.
  • real opalite exists but it’s green and not commonly found
  • once again, don’t believe everything on wikipedia.

Bismuth:

  • Doesn’t naturally form in the crystals, lab made!!!
  • rlly pretty though

Hematite:

  • Not naturally magnetic!
  • Magnetic hematite is 100% man made!

I’ll add more as I come across them~

cryptia

Jade:

  • Real jade is p. heavy! A way to tell if it is real is that it’ll be heavier than it looks.
  • Jade is faked with the following:
  • Serpentine “New Jade” or “Olive Jade”
  • Prehnite
  • Aventurine quartz
  • Grossular garnet “Transvaal jade”
  • Chrysoprase “Australian jade”
  • Malaysia Jade- dyed quartz that may be called by its color – Red Jade, Yellow Jade, Blue Jade
  • Opaque dolomite marble “Mountain Jade” (usually dyed)

Dragon vein agate:

  • Quench cracked, bleached, and dyed agate and some is quench cracked, and dyed glass.

Snowflake obsidian:

  • Being faked with a very low grade cheap dalmatian jasper.!
  • Snowflake will be gray while Dalmatian should have a lighter color

Hollow galena:

  • A lot of pieces have been proven to have been faked through sand blasting + similar techniques (but there may be real ones I’m not 100%)

Charoite:

  • Chinese Charoite doesn’t exist.
  • If it’s called that then it’s not real, real charoite isn’t banded and is more swirly.

Moldavite:

  • Very very commonly faked!!
  • Biggest giveaway is the ‘wet’ look a faked piece has due to the molding process
  • White moldavite doesn’t exist!!

Sunspar:

  • It’s really just yellow Labradorite, which isn’t a v rare gem

A Crash Course in Warding

elvenwitch

Let’s just start a series of crash courses in witchcraft, since sometimes we need to learn things the quick and dirty way. Today, let’s talk about wards.

What are wards?
Wards are protective energy barriers. They keep things out. You can place them around your home, certain rooms, even on certain objects. With practice and clear intentions, you can focus the wards to block out everything or only certain things. We’ll get to that in a bit.

Why should I ward my space and my things?
Wards can keep out all sorts of things you don’t want in your home. They can block out negative entities, wayward spirits, mischievous entities, demons, and (if you’re really good at what you’re doing) even gods. Some people ward their divination tools so they know there are no spirits tampering with the results.

So what do I need to do first?
Cleanse. This is very important. Wards are kind of like walls, or perhaps more accurately, bubbles. If you don’t clean the space first, you might trap things inside your ward bubble. You do not want that. There are lots of methods of cleansing, from burning sage to spritzing oil-infused water. Find a method you’re comfortable with and cleanse everything you’re going to be warding.

I’ve cleansed my home/item. Now what?
Now we ward. I’m going to give you a couple methods. Let’s start with my favorite, incense warding.

Incense warding can also be done with spritzes of water/essential oil blends or herb-infused water if you can’t have smoke in your space. Whichever you’re using, you want to have a blend of protective herbs. Bay leaves, cinnamon, ginger, mustard seed, and salt are some great options that you can find in the grocery store, no fancy witch shop necessary. If you’re using incense, make sure you’re using natural incense and not super cheap stuff that’s artificially scented. The magic is in the herbs, and you won’t get that from fake scents.

How to Incense/Spritz Ward an Item

  • Smoke or spray item.
  • Visualize the smoke or spray clinging to the item and wrapping around it like a tight blanket, protecting it from anything that would cause harm (or interference, etc.).

How to Incense/Spritz Ward Your Space

  • Pick a place to start. I always start at my altar, but it’s up to you. If you’re doing multiple floors, start either at the top or bottom floor.
  • Moving continuously to your right, smoke or spray along the walls and door frames. As you go, imagine a barrier being formed around the walls, ceiling, and floor, pushing outwards to fill the room. Visualize the smoke or spray forming the barrier to keep out anything that will do you harm. [If you have a hard time with visualization, you can simply focus on the intent of the smoke or spray keeping things out.]
  • Keep moving right, following the layout of your home, making sure you get all the closet spaces. You basically want to outline the entire area you’re protecting, whether it’s you’re room or your whole house.
  • For multiple floors, repeat on each level.
  • For big layouts where there are rooms in the middle, go around those rooms as well.
  • I like to reinforce the wards over outside doors, windows, and mirrors. These are all passages of sorts, and when I reach them, I use the incense to draw a pentagram in the air over them. This is entirely up to you.
  • You’re done when you’ve reached the point where you began.

So why do we go to the right? Is that important?
Kind of. Going to the right is like going clockwise. It’s about making things and progression, where going to the left or counter-clockwise is about deconstruction or reversal. [I read this idea in a witchy book a long time ago and will try to find a source when I can. If you honestly don’t feel it makes a difference, do whatever you’re comfortable with.]

Can I place wards that keep out certain things but not others?
Sure. When you’re going around your space/warding your item, your intent is what’s important. I like to ward out entities that mean harm - it’s nice and general and doesn’t keep the fae out. Some people might want certain spirits and not others. Have your intentions clear in your mind as you place your wards.

That’s neat and all, but what are some other ways to ward?
Let’s list a few.

Symbol/Sigil Wards

  • Choose (or make) a symbol or sigil that has protective properties. I’ve done this with Pluto’s astrological symbol because I worship him and it’s my way of being like, “Hey, Pluto. Please protect me, kthanxbai.” Pentagrams are nice and basic witchy/pagan symbols if you like them.
  • Draw the symbol over doors and windows. You do not literally have to draw it. It can be in water, incense smoke, or just your finger against the surface if you want.
  • As you’re drawing, make sure you have your intentions in mind - that nothing harmful can pass through this door, that the windows remain closed against entities, etc.

Energy Bubbles (if you have control over your energy)

  • Pick an item - any item.
  • Get your warding intentions in mind.
  • Channel lots of energy into the item. Visualize it emanating from the item in a bubble to fill your space.
  • If you’ve got mad skillz, you can form the bubble to the walls and be super exact with where its barriers are.

Vocal Wards

  • If you like spoken (or thought) spells, come up with a small chant to protect your space.
  • You can repeat this chant as you focus on your item being protected or as you walk around your home, protecting every room.
  • This is really great to incorporate into basically any other form of warding and gives your magic an extra bit of oomph.

I’ve heard wards can “fade” over time. True or false?
Wards are just energy. Like all energies, they can disperse and weaken over time, or if something particularly nasty puts effort into destroying them. Redo your wards every so often (I do mine every few months, but it’s up to you), and especially before spiritual interactions. I also like to do mine after I’ve had lots of company, to kind of clear out family’s lingering energies and reinforce what I don’t want in my house.

In general, the intent of your wards is the most important part. Know what you want to keep out. This concludes our crash course on warding. Now go forth and protect some stuff!

Essential Oils That Are Toxic To Pets

fuckyeahpaganism

When I used to work at a holistic pet food store, customers used to ask me if administering essential oils for the treatment of car sickness, anxiety, and other ailments where safe. The answer is: consult your vet first. Some are toxic, some are not, but we need to take into account the general health of your pet, pregnancy, age, allergies, and other issues that are present.

In general, it’s a tricky call. But if you are using essential oils in your house as a spritzer or in a diffuser, please be aware of your fur babies, reptile babies, and feathered friends, and how they react. The smaller the animal, the higher the sensitivity is to these chemicals.

Phenols (a chemical group in oils such as those derived from Thyme & Oregano), Monoterpene Hydrocarbons (such as Pine), Phenylpropanes (such as Basil & Cinnamon), and many essential oils in the Ketone group (such as Pennyroyal and Wormwood), should be avoided all together when treating animals

There’s debate over whether hydrosols, a by-product made when a plant is steam distilled to extract essential oils, are also toxic to cats. Since the verdict isn’t out, we’re going to steer clear of any and all essential oil products in the future just in case. [x]

Here are essential oils unsafe for pets:

  1. Anise (Pimpinella anisum)
  2. Birch (Betula)
  3. Bitter Almond (Prunus dulcis)
  4. Boldo (Peumus boldus)
  5. Calamus (Acorus calamus)
  6. Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora)
  7. Cassia (Cassia fistula)
  8. Chenopodium (Chenopodium album)
  9. Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum)
  10. Garlic (Allium sativum)
  11. Goosefoot (Chenopodium murale)
  12. Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana)
  13. Hyssop (Hyssopus sp. with the exception of Decumbens)
  14. Juniper (Juniperus sp. with the exception of Juniper Berry)
  15. Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)
  16. Mustard (Brassica juncea)
  17. Oregano (Origanum vulgare)
  18. Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium)
  19. Red or White Thyme
  20. Rue (Ruta graveolens)
  21. Santolina (Santolina chamaecyparissus)
  22. Sassafras (Sassafras albidum)
  23. Savory (Satureja)
  24. Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare)
  25. Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
  26. Terebinth (Pistacia palaestina)
  27. Thuja (Thuja occidentalis)
  28. Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens)
  29. Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium)
  30. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Here is a list of some essential oils that are known to be toxic to cats:

  • Peppermint
  • Oregano
  • Clove
  • Sage
  • Citrus oils
  • Lavender
  • Melaleuca (tea tree oil)
  • Cinnamon (cassia)
  • Wintergreen
  • Thyme
  • Birch
  • Bergamot
  • Pine
  • Spruce
  • Eucalyptus
  • Any other oils containing phenols

It is important to keep in mind that many oils that are fine for dogs and horses, are not good for cats (such as Citrus and Pine), rabbits or birds.  Many essential oils can be used topically but not internally. Conversely, some essential oils may be used internally but will irritate the skin. Also, the extreme concentration of essential oils may make a type dangerous for pets, whereas using the plant or herb itself is not an issue.

Many pet stores carry items that contain essential oils which can be easily applied and can be safer for your pet, like NaturVet’s Tea Tree oil ear wash or Cloud Star Buddy’s Lavender & Mint dog shampoo.

[source 1] [source 2]

TL; DR: When is doubt consult a vet. Be mindful of your animal friends when using essential oils in sprays, candles, diffusers, ect.

Intro to Stichomancy

snwitch

Hey everyone! If you’re looking for an easy and effective method of divination that doesn’t require you to go out and buy expensive or hard-to-find tools like tarot cards or rune sets, stichomancy may be the thing for you! In this post, I want to give a nice, quick and easy tutorial to performing a basic stichomancy tutorial. Let’s get started :)

What is stichomancy, Livi?

Stichomancy is arguably one of the oldest known forms of divination. Some sources say that it is at least 3000 years old, but it is hard to get an exact estimate on when this form of divination began. Stichomancy refers to a method of divination in which a random passage from a random book is used to bring clarity to a situation or predict the future. Bibliomancy is an extension of stichomancy that uses a holy book, such as the Bible.

How to perform a stichomancy reading

1) Find a place with lots of books. The more the better! I typically use either a small shelf of books that I have in my room or a larger book case that is in my house. You can go to a library, a bookstore, or any place where there will be a variety of books in one place. If you’re going to the library or bookstore for this, you can choose a specific section with books in a genre that you’d like to use for stichomancy (Classics are commonly used, but any genre could be used.)

2) Stand in front of your chosen shelf and close your eyes. Think about your question (Try to steer away from yes/no questions. The same question guidelines for tarot/runes/etc. apply to stichomancy). Find the book that *calls* to you. You can run your hand along the books if you wish. While closing your eyes, pick the book and remove it from the shelf.

3) Now, flip to a random page in the book. You can keep your eyes closed or open them if you wish. I like to flip around in the book until I get the feeling that it is time to stop. When I feel like it’s time to stop, I stop on whatever page I’m on.

4) Keep your eyes closed and point with your index finger to a random spot on the page. Open your eyes and read the passage that you have pointed to.

5) Use your intuition and interpretation skills to interpret the passage in regards to your question!

As you can see, stichomancy is pretty straight forward. The hardest part of stichomancy is the interpretation. For example:

I stand in front of my bookshelf and ask my question, “How can I make this Summer less sad and boring?”. It’s a pretty simple question– nothing to serious. I close my eyes, pick my book, flip to a random page, and point. When I open my eyes, I see that I’ve picked the book, Wild by Cheryl Strayed. The passage says:

“’What are we doing?’ Paul asked after a while.

‘Saying goodbye,’ I said. I thought of asking him to go back to my apartment with me, as we’d done a few times over the course of our year-long separation, falling into bed together for a night or an afternoon, but I didn’t have the heart.

‘Goodbye,’ he said.”

Now, at first, I’d think, “How on Earth does this relate to my summer?”, but if I think about it, I can deduce that this means that I need to move on from the past and let go of the friendships that have died, even if I still wish things could’ve been different. I have to look into the passage a little bit and think about it, but when I relate it to my own personal situation, it makes sense. Use your intuition and think about the feelings and thoughts that the passage automatically inspires in you. It may seem cryptic at first, but if you look deep enough, you should be able to find the true meaning of the passage in regards to your question. Note that these readings can be confusing, especially to a newbie, and, because of this, I do not recommend using stichomancy for serious life decisions unless you have been practicing stichomancy for a long time and have a very solid grasp on how to interpret passages.

Let me know how your stichomancy readings go! If you don’t have access to books for stichomancy, try this virtual stichomancy website: http://www.facade.com/stichomancy/

I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial! f you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask! Thanks for reading,

Livi
